BRIEF
A transportation management system for a freight brokerage, built a unique micro frontend architecture that allowed for fast deployment of new features. Updates in the programming language and framework, created many solutions to the rendering of front end elements. In between design and development of other product features; a need arose to create a way to bring UI standardization, ameliorate technical debt and evolve the way design was done.
Coming from a manufacturing background, I look at design systems as part of the production process. As a production line evolves to apply lean principles, waste in the system becomes more apparent, and naturally initiatives emerge to fix them. Things that can be templated or reused are organized to save time, resources and standardize quality. While the act of finding these things trains individuals to think in a way that promotes continuous improvement of the production flow. Ordering the chaos gives space to create and experiment in new ways. It's going from an artisanal way of creating to the industrious.
From coding in Phoenix Liveview, writing unit tests, designing for a system, and getting developer adoption; this project brought with it tons of growth

DIVE INTO THE DETAILS
RESULTS
The design system's results weren't just the kudos from the business stakeholders, though that was always a welcome result for the team. It was the clear, real-world improvement in the user experience: things got cleaner, inputs took fewer keystrokes and finally there was consistency. Most importantly, once the system reached wide adoption, the release cycle sped up —we were launching new UI features in days instead of weeks. This proven efficiency generated internal excitement, inspiring us to plan the next evolutionary step: a strategic move toward a unified, monolith frontend architecture that fully integrates the component library, setting us up for even faster and more sustainable growth.
